Toddler Natural haircare Routine

How I take care of naomi’s natural hair.

If there is anything I have learned from being natural and from my daughter’s natural hair is that simplicity is best. So in other words… KEEP IT SIMPLE. Naomi was born with a full head of hair, and like most babies over time her hair started to thin in the back and eventually she had very little hair.  As a first time mom, I knew this was expected but it still broke my heart, especially since she was a girl. I felt like all my dreams of doing my baby girl’s hair flew right out the window.

I know it may sound crazy but I am grateful for that, and I say this because it allowed me to learn about her hair and her hair needs. Surely you are wondering “Don’t I already know how to take care of hair?” Well yes, but everyone’s hair is different, Naomi and I absolutely do not have the same hair texture. If you want to use the hair classification system I would say I have 4c hair and Naomi has mostly 4b hair and bits of 4c.

So when it comes to her haircare, I have broken it down into Daily, Bi-weekly, and Monthly. This routine or schedule wasn’t created overnight. I was something that formulated over time, again trial and error. Below are all the things I do to her hair on that basis.

Daily

  • Everyday her hair is in a protective style. This allows for little to no manipulation of her hair and in the long run will allow for it retain length.
  • Oils her scalps either in the morning or at night. Sometimes I use an at home blend of oils or at home shea butter hair mix.
  • Lay her edges with an edge control. (this is really only done when we are actually going out)
  • Sleeps on a satin pillowcase and wears a silk bonnet to sleep.

Bi-Weekly

  • Take out her old protective style and gently detangle her hair while it is damp.
  • Do a rice water rinse on her hair (please do your own research on this as it is not for every hair type)
  • Shampoo and condition her hair.
  • Put her hair back into another protective hair style.

Monthly

  • Do a deep conditioning treatment .
  • Do a hot oil treatment.

Mom truth: Looking at all of this written down in black and white has made me realize that I take WAY better care of Naomi’s hair than my own.

Now I am sure you are wondering…”But Grace, what products do you use?”  Below is a list of all the products I use in her hair. Now just because I use this on Naomi’s hair and it works, does not mean it will work as well on your child’s hair, remember everyones hair is different.

Products I use:

Cantu Kids Shampoo

Cantu Kids Conditioner

Below are two videos on how I typically wash and style Naomi’s hair. If you watch these videos you will be able to see how her hair has grown, and the differences in her hair routines.

In this video I am demonstrating how I wash and style my daughter’s hair when she was just a little bit older than one years old.
