Back to school hairstyles for little girls

Well the time is here again and it’s time for back to school. I’m sure we all know that this School year is going to be looking a little bit different. Some of us are actually going to homeschool our kids while some  have no choice but to send them back to school. I’m sure whatever decision you make is going to be the best decision for you and your family. I am here to ease the stress by providing you with easy back to school hairstyles.

Typically there are so many things you have to consider when it’s back to school time. Academics aside, you have to make sure your child has all the things they need to make the school you run as smoothly as possible, not only that you want your little one to feel confident. So you take them back to school shopping, get them a new backpack, clothes and sneakers. Then the very last thing on the list is for the girls to get their hair done.

Growing up I remember going to the salon a couple days before school started to get a nice back to back to school hairstyle that would last me a couple weeks until my mom hair to figure out what to do with my hair again. Now my daughter Naomi is going to be starting pre school so just like my mother did for me, I want to make sure that she has a nice back to school hairstyle that is going to last. When going back to school it is important that children look and feel their best. So in order for that to happen I want to make sure that I am playing my part as her mother to make sure that happens.

I’m going to be sharing with you three back to school hairstyles for little girls.

The Fro-hawk (Beginner)

These back to school hairstyles I would say is more so for a beginner and I say that because it doesn’t really require much work. You know the type of back to school hairstyle that you can do in the morning in under 10 minutes.

  1. Take your child’s hair and divide it into three equal sections.
  2. Spray some type of detangling spray to soften up their hair. You can see the one I use on Naomi’s hair here.
  3. Add some type of gel or edge control to smooth down the hair. I have a few different ones that I use in Naomi’s hair but this one is our current favorite.
  4. Put them in ponytails.

I love these back to school hairstyles because it’s cute and super easy, not to mention you could dress it up with any type of hair bow! Naomi has a whole stash of hair bows. She has colorful ones and now we just added some fall inspired bows to her collection.

If you need a more play-by-play on how to achieve this hairstyle, check out our YouTube video on this beginner friendly back to school hairstyle.

Criss Cross Pigtails (Intermediate)

This one just might be my favorite, I say that because we love to do Naomi’s hair in pigtails. Make sure you’re following Naomi over on Instagram because I am always sharing hair tips and tricks for toddlers. So with this style, I took basic pigtails and jazzed it up a bit. I did use some hair extensions for this style, but you don’t have to especially if your child has longer hair.

  1. Divide your child’s hair into pigtails
  2. Take a small section from the back and divide it into 2 small ponytails.
  3. take another picture from the middle and divide it into 2 small ponytails.
  4. Criss cross the small ponytails going upwards
  5. Once you reach the top, add the remaining hair into pigtails.

Of course I added bows. Sometimes instead of doing two bows I just add one oversized bow. We get our oversized bows here.

Braided Pigtails (Advanced)

Now I don’t consider myself the best braider but I say this is an advanced hair style because it is going to require some braiding experience, strategic partings, and time. The good part about this back to school hairstyle is that it will last 2-3 weeks depending on how you braid and the texture of your child’s hair.

  1. Detangle you child’s hair. It is important when doing a braided hairstyle that you start with detangled hair. Watch my video on how I detangle my daughter’s hair
  2. Divide the hair into 3 sections (a small part at the top for the bangs, a section for the pigtails and a large section for the back twists)
  3. Start at the top and braid the bangs into any direction you like (this is all based on personal preference)
  4. Braid the middle section into pigtails (I did about 6 braids per pigtail)
  5. The large section in the back I did individual twists.

I hope this helps a mama out there that is looking for some cute, creative, and easy back to school hairstyles for their little one.
