In 2020 we can no longer ignore what is going on, racism and police brutality are at an all time high. It is not okay for us to turn on the t.v and continue to see black men and women being murdered. Seeing this truly breaks my heart. It almost makes me feel like we have gone back in time when things were divided. It’s things like the All Blacks Matter Movement that continue to bring me hope, as new laws are being made, and officers are starting to be held accountable for the murders and injustices they commit.
As parents and guardians let’s continue to do the following things:
- Teach them to be kind: This sounds self explanatory, but you would be surprised. Being kind takes less energy than being mean to someone.
- Teach them to love themselves and others despite their differences ie: race, color, gender, etc.: Let them know that just because someone is different than you, doesn’t make them or that person any less of a person. Remind them that it is our differences that make us unique.
- Have those difficult conversations: I know this may be hard depending on the age of your child, you may be thinking that they are too young. Bring the conversation to their age level, if they are 2yrs old and up it is time to have those conversations.
- Be a POSITIVE example, children are always watching: I mentioned this above, children are sponges they are soaking up the good, the bad and ugly. So let’s provide them with as much good as possible.
- Expose them to diversity: It is our job to ensure they don’t stay in their bubble which is the four walls of their house and the people they normally see. Expose them to other races, religions, genders, and more.
- Most importantly stay prayed up: This world is crazy and honestly it is only God who is sustaining us during this time, and on a daily basis. We must continue to cover our child and ourselves in the blood of Jesus Christ.
Below are some books that teach diversity, and encourage acceptance of yourself and others. These books are perfect for young children as young as 2 years old. I hope these books will lead you on the right path to teaching your little ones about self acceptance and diversity.
